National Doughnut Week is a great way to get people together to raise some money towards The Children’s Trust and to enjoy some doughnuts.
The Doughnut
Doughnuts are a type of cake which are traditionally made from a flour dough which is then shaped into a doughnut or a ring shape and then fried. You will find that they come in many different varieties and everyone has their favourite kind of doughnut which they prefer. The typical doughnuts that you can buy are jam doughnuts, sugar ring doughnuts, iced ring doughnuts and iced doughnuts with a filling inside such as apple, custard or chocolate sauce. Doughnuts are available to buy in many bakeries, cafés and supermarkets as well as franchises such as Krispy Kreme Doughnuts and Dunkin’ Donuts which specialise in a large variety of doughnuts to buy.
Jam Doughnut
Doughnuts come in all different varieties and one of the most popular type of doughnut is the jam doughnut. The jam doughnut is traditionally served with raspberry jam inside, however you can also get them with strawberry jam inside. The jam doughnut is finished off by being dipped in a generous amount of sugar to make it taste even sweeter.
Iced Doughnuts
Iced doughnuts or glazed doughnuts are doughnuts which have a topping of icing put on them. Krispy Kreme’s original doughnuts are glazed with a thin layer of icing all over the doughnut, which gives it a unique taste. Other iced doughnuts you can get can have a variety of flavoured icing on top and may also have sprinkles put on top to decorate them.
Ring Doughnuts
You can buy ring doughnuts in many different forms. Some are plain and dipped in sugar and others have icing on top. Some may also have icing and sprinkles on top, your typical doughnut that you would see Homer Simpson eating; pink with colourful sprinkles on top.
Other Doughnuts
Cream Doughnuts
You can buy fresh cream doughnuts in many bakeries and supermarkets. With all doughnuts, especially cream doughnuts, it is best to eat them on the day of purchase so that they taste their best. You may find that fresh cream doughnuts are shaped more into a finger doughnut with the cream and jam put into the centre of the doughnut.
Filled Doughnuts
Jam doughnuts are probably one of the most popular filled doughnuts. The jam can be different flavours such as strawberry or raspberry jam. Then there are other popular fillings such as apple and custard flavoured fillings. These flavoured fillings are often found in sugar based doughnuts. You can also buy filled doughnuts which are topped with icing. Places such as Krispy Kreme Doughnuts sell a variety of these, for example a chocolate iced doughnut with a chocolate sauce inside.
Doughnut Holes
Ring doughnuts can be made by either being shaped into a ring shape or by being cut into ring shapes which then leaves behind a round ball or a doughnut hole. A doughnut hole is simply a small sized piece of doughnut which has been formed due to the hole in the ring doughnut. You may find that some places will sell doughnut holes which are fried and dipped in sugar and are a nice bite sized piece of doughnut.
Now that you have worked up an appetite for a nice yummy doughnut why not support The Children’s Trust and get involved with National Doughnut Week by purchasing a doughnut from your local bakery and maybe even surprise your family with a box of a dozen doughnuts to share with everyone.
